Feudo della Selva is an ancient Federician location; it is magically inserted within the perimeter of the Bosco Incoronata recognized as a Natural Park as it is the largest lowland forest in all of Europe. The first apparition of the Crowned Madonna in the woods on an oak dates back to 1001; there were many hermits, saints and poets who over the centuries alternated between the hermitages, the monasteries and the ancient Monastery of the Incoronata. In 1240 and until 1243 Frederick II made the Bosco his beloved location for falconry, hare and wild boar hunting, the Bosco dell'Incoronata a place magical and fascinatingcapable of triggering in Frederick II the desire to write the treatise on hunting, the De arte venandi. It is said in
his letters, from 1240 to 1243, that in the Bosco dell'Incoronata Federico II decided to overturn the rules of ancient cuisine and to include fresher and more delicate ingredients, together with the use of wild herbs and short-term preservation methods of fish and meat . It is precisely this place that still inspired Frederick II to begin drafting a treatise on cuisine, the "Liber de coquina," written in the Latin language of the time; it is an ambitious manual of international gastronomy aimed at the Western world and fits well among the scientific manuals of the time. Its drafting is dated from 1240 to 1250.
